The filmmaker knows his audience and how to sell them the big and glamorous Bollywood that we love without making it seem too unrelatable. However, while he succeeded in giving the film industry some of its biggest love stories, it seems like his own has left him in pain and brokenhearted.
Karan Johar opened up about his one-sided love story
Filmmaker, Karan Johar sat for a candid conversation with Raj Shamani on his podcast. During the conversation, he talked about his one-sided love and revealed how painful it was. The filmmaker called it the worst feeling in the world and elaborated on why he thought so. He revealed that there was nothing as unfortunate as being in love. He added that one becomes their worst version if their love is one-sided. Karan further shared that it often feels like there is something heavy lying on their chest. He was quoted as saying:
“Pyaar se kambaqt koi cheeze na bani hai na banegi. There is physical pain, not the heart attack pain, but there is pain. You do feel anxiety, you can’t breathe. Aap worst version of yourself ban jaate ho jab aapka pyaar ek tarfa hojata hai…You feel someone has put a very heavy thing on your chest. You keep checking your phone, if he is online, why didn’t he call, where could he be. Your mind is always distracted. It is torture, one-sided love.”
Karan Johar revealed how he let go of his one-sided love
In the same conversation, Karan Johar revealed how he was able to let go of his one-sided love. The director shared that once he started looking at his love as something that empowered him, he was able to let go. He further added that he soon realised the love he was trying to cling to was not his to keep. He was quoted as saying:
“When I looked at one-sided love as a power of a feeling that I had, it has empowered me, then I started letting go. That love wasn’t mine anyway.”
Karan Johar’s one-sided love was not negative
Further in the conversation, Karan Johar revealed that while it was the worst feeling in the world and it ached a lot, it made him empathetic towards those who were going through the same thing. He added that his love was abundant, and despite being one-sided, it was never negative. He recalled that he never wanted anything bad to happen to the person who couldn’t reciprocate his love and stated:
“But dard hota hai, it’s the worst feeling in the world. I have much empathy for those who are going through one-sided love…Mera pyaar beshumaar tha, woh pyaar tha, ek tarfa tha but kabhi negative nahi tha. I never hated or wanted anything bad to happen who couldn’t reciprocate my love.”

Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was inspired by his own one-sided love story
Karan Johar has previously talked about how his film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was inspired by his own one-sided love story. The film, which was released in 2016, was a musical romantic drama film directed, produced and written by Karan under his banner Dharma Productions. The film had a massive star cast, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles.
