As we inch closer to Memorial Day, summer’s dominant trends have begun to make their way off of the runways and into the streets. When it comes to the shorts, the buzzword is Bermudas. Vogue’s senior fashion news editor, Laia Garcia-Furtado, first noticed the knee-length style trending last spring, on a visit to Australian Fashion Week, remarking that “the Aussie girls really love” them. American girls, it seems, have followed suit. Bermuda shorts walked the spring runways at Miu Miu and Dries Van Noten, and have since become an unmissable summer staple.
Vogue’s Favorite Bermuda Shorts
More comfortable and cooler than a pair of trousers in the heat, but still appropriate enough for most offices, Bermuda shorts might just be the missing link in your summer wardrobe. Bermuda shorts bring a level of contrast to a variety of looks. As Garcia-Furtado noted in her piece, “the secret is to wear them a little big…this way the silhouette is more akin to a proper skirt, which makes them even more subversive with a little heel or an extra femme-y flat.”
There are lots of ways, subversive and not, to rock Bermuda shorts this summer. If you need a few ideas, look no further than our styling guide below.
The All-Black Minimalist Look
Bermuda shorts and a strapless top in black-on-black strike the perfect balance between elegance and ease. Add a hit of red at the feet and a sculptural cord necklace to tie it all together.
The Classic Jeans and Tee, But Different
Think of it as the summer remix of jeans and a white tee–swap in tailored Bermuda shorts and keep the tee boxy.
The Sporty Suiting
Give classic suiting a sporty twist by pairing pleated Bermuda shorts with an of-the-moment anorak in rich shades of chocolate brown.
The Playful Pleated Short With a Printed Tee
For an irreverent take on Bermuda shorts that’s equal parts tomboy and sweet, try a khaki pair styled with a striped tee and classic Mary Janes.
The Capri-esque Short with a Wedge
Slim-fit capri pants offer a softer, more feminine take on the classic Bermuda. Lean into the mood with sleek wedges and a raffia shoulder bag.
The Classic All-American With a Boat Shoe
Lean into Americana with a classic red-and-white pairing, which is especially fitting in the form of Bermuda shorts and a cropped button-down. Loewe’s boat shoe loafers add an off-kilter twist.
The Undone Tomboy Look
For a stripped-back tomboy look with echoes of early Miu Miu, all you need is a tailored short, crisp white tank, shiny loafers, and socks.
