Whether you’re chasing a whisper of color or a full-on flush, the best powder blush formulas are far more versatile than they’re credited for. Long before liquid and cream iterations took over social media feeds, powder blushes were our first flirtation with color—the gateway to a lifelong relationship with makeup.
For many of us, those early experiments came straight from a mother’s vanity. I still remember sneaking into the marbled acrylic green makeup organizer, eyes wide, hands shaky, as I swept on a hint of her early-2000s CoverGirl blush with that unmistakably tiny, scratchy brush included in the packaging.

Everything You Need To Know
How to Choose a Powder Blush
According to pro Makeup artist Jacinta Spencer, finding the best powder blush is all about prioritizing the finish and pigmentation for your complexion. Meanwhile, Spickard adds that complimenting your skin’s undertone is of equal importance.
- Finish: “Depending on the occasion, you can [shop by] finish, whether it’s a luminous shimmer for the evening, a soft blurring matte, or a fresh, skin-like look for daytime,” says Spencer, though there’s no hard and fast rules as to which finish you should go for—pick based your personal preference.
- Pigmentation: “It’s equally important to select the right shade and pigmentation level to add a lovely, super natural flush to your cheeks,” Spencer previously told Vogue. Remember, paler colors tend to look most natural on fairer skin, while vibrant shades compliment deeper skin tones.
- Undertones: “Always pick a blush that harmonizes with your skin tone. It’s easier than you think— peach, coral, and terracotta shades bring warmth to golden and yellow undertones. Meanwhile true pinks, mauves, and berry tones enhance cooler, pink skin tones,” says Spickard.
How to Apply Powder Blush
“Pop a bright blush on the apples of the cheeks and all places you would naturally get pink if you were in the sun a little too long,”pro makeup artist Jenna Kristina previously told Vogue, suggesting the temples, the tip and bridge of the nose, and along the contours of the eyes—that way, your complexion looks overall more vibrant, and awake.
How to Make Powder Blush Last
“Powder and cream formulas are a mixed bag on longevity. However, liquid formulas are really best in class when it comes to longevity. The overall rule of thumb to increase long-wear of powder blushes layer them on top of liquids or creams,” pro makeup artist Kasey Spickard tells Vogue.
When in doubt, you can always opt for Spickard’s method, which he playfully refers to as the blush sandwich, to ensure the longest possible staying power: cream blush, set with powder blush, finished with another layer of cream. “The powder blush sets the first layer of cream blush for long-wear results, while the second creamy layer brings back that coveted glowing-from-within finish,” says Spickard.
