Bhumi Pednekar, widely recognised for her portrayals in socially driven cinema, is now venturing into a more glamorous and stylised space with her first web series The Royals. The Netflix show, co-created by Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, premieres on May 9 and features Bhumi in the role of Sophia – a poised, layered character who represents a significant shift from the actor’s previous screen image.

“For me, it’s more about how something makes me feel in the moment,” Bhumi said in a recent interview. “I instinctively react to scripts. When people watch the show, I hope they’ll see exactly why this was the right choice.”
In The Royals, Bhumi Pednekar plays Sophia opposite Ishaan Khatter’s character, the Maharaja. Their dynamic, charged with tension and emotional complexity, unfolds against the backdrop of royal grandeur. The choice of Sophia was not just about stepping into a world of opulence, but also about exploring new facets of performance, revealed the actress. “It was one of the first times I truly got to play around with how I look on screen,” Bhumi she added in another interview. According to her, the character gave her the freedom to explore both fashion and emotions in a way she hadn’t previously.
More importantly, the actress insists that her connection with Sophia ran deeper than the surface. “I have never felt this confident opening up to a character, which in turn opens up to the audience,” she stated and continued, “Sophia mirrors parts of my own personality – it felt refreshing and intimate to play her.” Apart from her and Ishaan Khatter, the show also features actors Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Dino Morea, and Vihaan Samat in key roles.
While The Royals will be the first release on Bhumi in the web series format, she has also been working on another digital project titled Daldal. The upcoming series will see her in the role of a cop for the first time, signalling yet another shift in her evolving career.
Earlier this year, Bhumi Pednekar was seen on the big screen in Mere Husband Ki Biwi, alongside Arjun Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh. Along with The Royals and later with Daldal, it seems that Bhumi is aiming to build a diverse digital footprint, stepping into genres and characters previously unexplored in her film career.
