It was in 1928 when the luxury brand, Cartier received an order from Maharaja Bhupinder Singh to create the most beautiful necklace. The Maharaja provided the brand with 4000 precious stones. The largest diamonds became a part of the necklace, and the small ones were treated as a payment for their work.

The necklace was made with five chains and a neck collar. It also featured De Beers, the world’s seventh largest diamond, at its centre, which was 428 carat pre-cut weight. It was the largest cushion-cut yellow diamond.

The Patiala necklace had 2930 diamonds, weighing 1000 carats

Apart from the world’s largest diamond, the necklace featured 2930 diamonds, weighing approximately 1000 carats. The Maharaja also gave 116 Burmese rubies, weighing over 170 carats. The necklace also consisted of seven other large diamonds ranging from 18 to 73 carats, other than emerald and pearls. The necklace was the largest and the most expensive single order made by Cartier and was completed in three years.

It is stated that Maharaja Bhupinder Singh wanted to gift the necklace to his favourite wife, Maharani Sri Bakhtawar Kaur, however, after his death, the necklace was surpassed to his son, Yadavindra Singh. It remained in the royal house for three decades, but when India gained Independence in 1948, the necklace mysteriously disappeared from the treasury.

The Patiala necklace resurfaced in a broken and dilapidated state

Years after its disappearance, the Patiala necklace resurfaced at an auction in Geneva in 1982, where the De Beers diamond was sold for 3 million USD. In 1998, the other part of the necklace was discovered in an antique shop in London without its most significant stones. Cartier acquired the necklace and re-created the masterpiece with replica stones.
