Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh made a spectacular Met Gala debut as he arrived looking like Indian royalty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for fashion’s biggest annual night.

A global sensation, who is also lauded for his high-end fashion game (think of his Balenciaga, Vetements, Gucci and Fendi picks), wowed in traditional white attire by designer Prabal Gurung styled with heavy jewels for his highly anticipated Met debut. The ‘Born to Shine’ singer exuded Maharaja vibes, clad in the ethereal ensemble teamed with unmissable jewels.

Diljit opted for an ivory ensemble, an angrakha with heavy gold embroidery complete with a matching cape, bejewelled turban and a sword. He totally nailed the desi take on dandyism, with his look inspired by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.

His jewellery game, however, stole the show. The cape of his ensemble also boasted a map of Punjab and Punjabi alphabets (Gurmukhi) embroidered on it.

The Punjabi singer-actor has often used prominent international stages to pay tribute to his roots. For his Coachella performances, for instance, he paid a sartorial tribute to his Punjabi roots when he performed in traditional attire – kurta, tamba (a drape worn by men in Punjab), turban and kundal (traditional silver hoop earrings).

This year, the Met exhibition’s theme is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, with the accompanying dress code ‘Tailored for You’. This theme celebrates Black style, particularly focusing on the history and cultural significance of Black dandyism and menswear tailoring.

This year, the Met Gala is extra special, as a bevy of Indian celebrities attended the coveted event. Apart from beloved Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, Shah Rukh Khan and Kiara Advani also marked their Met Gala debuts. Priyanka Chopra, Natasha Poonawalla, Isha Ambani, designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra also attended the gala event in their sartorial best.
