In the fifth episode of The Filmy Hustle, hosted by distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Kabir Khan opened up on his journey and what went behind the making of his memorable films. He admitted that it took a while to lock Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) as his second outing with Salman Khan after the blockbuster, Ek Tha Tiger (2012).
Kabir Khan on why he knew Salman Khan would back Bajrangi Bhaijaan despite no action: “Salman is a LIVING example of the secular culture of this country”; also reveals why Salman feared studios might have REJECTED the film
Kabir Khan added, “After Ek Tha Tiger, a lot of offers started pouring in for similar kinds of films and from different actors. I realized I’d get bored. Salman asked me what I wanted to do next. He even shared some of the ideas that he had. But the voice within me was not convinced. I asked Salman to give me some time, so that I could come up with something that would resonate with both of us.”
He continued, “Six months later, K V Vijayendra Prasad sir got in touch with me and gave me a two-line idea. In those two lines, I could visualize the film in my mind. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was one such idea. I asked myself, ‘It’s so up my street and so simple. Why didn’t I think about it?’.”
He further said, “Something told me that Salman would love the idea. Yes, it had no action; it was there only for 15 seconds at the brothel. In fact, he gets slapped, that too, by the Pakistani cop; that’s like a taboo! Yet, I knew that he’d react to it positively because Salman identifies very strongly with the politics of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He is a living example of the secular culture of this country and so is his family. He truly believes in friendship among the neighbourhood.”
Kabir then stated, “Salman started levitating when he heard the story. By the time I finished the narration, he was like, ‘Yeh kya kahaani hai yaar’. He also said, ‘Yeh hum produce karenge’ because somewhere, he realized that since it was a Salman Khan film about a little girl with no action and little romance, studios (might not back it).”
