The flow of water in river Chenab downstream has been reduced after the closure of Baglihar Dam’s gates in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban. The development comes days after India suspended the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty amid heightened tensions with Pakistan over the deadly Pahalgam attack.

The Baglihar Dam has been a longstanding point of contention between India and Pakistan, with the latter having sought World Bank arbitration in the past.

The reduced downstream flow of Chenab will potentially impact Pakistan’s environment and agriculture.

According to a report by news agency PTI, following restrictions on the Baglihar dam, India is planning similar measures at the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River.

The Kishanganga Dam has faced legal and diplomatic scrutiny, especially regarding its impact on the Neelum River, a tributary of the Jhelum.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, has governed the use of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.

India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty came after the Pahalgam terror attack which killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
