A Boston University employee has come under scrutiny after posting a controversial graphic on social media, saying that staff working for the department of government efficiency (DOGE) are “wanted for treason, dead or alive.” Jared May, an assistant media technician at the university, shared the post on Bluesky, featuring images of several young men allegedly working for DOGE.
DOGE, led by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, was established to streamline government operations and reduce waste, a cornerstone of US President Donald Trump‘s 2024 re-election campaign. The department has been a polarising entity, receiving both strong support and sharp criticism, particularly from Democratic leaders who question its authority and legitimacy.
May’s post not only included the provocative graphic but also listed the names of the individuals depicted. Following public backlash, Boston University responded with a statement to Boston.com, noting, “We are aware of a post made by an employee on his personal social media account. We do not comment on personnel matters. The views expressed do not reflect the values of Questrom School of Business.” Also, May’s staff webpage on the university’s site was removed.
Elon Musk weighed in on the controversy via X, responding to a screenshot of May’s post with the terse remarks, “Noted,” and “He has committed a crime.”
DOGE has faced intense opposition from Democratic lawmakers, including senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who criticised the department’s influence over federal operations. “An unelected shadow government is conducting a hostile takeover of the federal government,” read a post from Schumer’s X account, reiterating sentiments he expressed during a press conference. “DOGE is not a real government agency. DOGE has no authority to make spending decisions, shut down programs, or ignore federal law. Congress must take action to restore the rule of law.”
In response to Schumer’s statements, Musk defended DOGE’s mission, saying, “Hysterical reactions like this are how you know that @DOGE is doing work that really matters.”
