Joseph Aoun, Lebanon’s army chief, was elected as the country’s president on Thursday, finally ending a two-year political vacuum. Aged 60, Aoun is seen as the candidate backed by the United States and regional power Saudi Arabia, positioning him as the key figure to stabilise Lebanon, which is grappling with a dire financial crisis. After being sworn in, Aoun declared, “A new phase in Lebanon’s history” had begun. Analysts view him as a man of integrity who is well-placed to rebuild Lebanon after his predecessor, Michel Aoun (no relation), vacated the presidency in 2022. The Lebanese political system has struggled with multiple deadlocks in electing a successor, with Hezbollah previously backing another candidate, Suleiman Frangieh, who withdrew in favour of Aoun.
