One person died, and nine others were injured Tuesday night after a shooting and fiery car crash in a suburban area north of Baltimore in the US state of Maryland. Police responded to reports of gunshots near a funeral home and found a burning car on its side.
The car crashed outside a seemingly closed funeral home with reports of gunshots throughout the surrounding neighborhood, according to Baltimore County police chief Robert McCullough. He said investigators think the violence was not random but targeted and isolated.
“It appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another and that this incident was intentional and targeted,” the police chief said.
Authorities haven’t released the conditions of the nine injured individuals or confirmed if all nine were shot. Some bullets hit the funeral home, and police received reports of shots fired in other areas. McCullough described a moving gunfight leading up to the crash at the funeral home.
County executive Johnny Olszewski pledged support for the investigation. “This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County,” he said. “These types of incidents are unheard of here, and so it really shocks the conscience.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
