Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is set to be brought back to New York as soon as Thursday. Luigi’s lawyer confirmed that the IVY league graduate has waived extradition.
The Pennsylvania judge must either approve the waiver or hold a hearing on Thursday morning, right after another hearing for Mangione’s local charges.
In case the extradition paperwork is in order, the NYPD would transport Mangione from Pennsylvania to New York, as per the ABC News.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has made her stance clear, saying, “I’m ready to bring him back here and make sure justice is served.”
The 26 year old alleged killer is accused of waiting nearly an hour outside a Hilton hotel on 4 December before murdering Thompson upon his arrival for an investors meeting. The attack, which took place in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, shocked the city. Prosecutors also described it as a calculated act “intended to evoke terror.”
On 9 December, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after being on the run for nearly a week. Authorities say he was carrying a 9 mm handgun with a 3D-printed receiver, a homemade silencer, and live ammunition at the time of his arrest.
Upon his arrest, he possessed a 9 mm handgun with a 3D-printed receiver, a homemade silencer, two ammunition magazines and live cartridges, prosecutors revealed.
Back in Manhattan, prosecutors have already upgraded his charges to include first-degree murder linked to terrorism. He’s also facing a series of other grave charges, including second-degree murder, multiple counts of illegal weapons possession, and forgery.
