US President-elect Donald Trump said that “anything can happen” when addressing the possibility of war with Iran during a recent Time magazine interview. The publication has named him ‘Person of the Year.’
When asked about the likelihood of conflict with Iran during his upcoming term, Trump responded, “Anything can happen. Anything can happen. It’s a very volatile situation.” He then shifted the discussion to Ukraine, asserting that its missile strikes into Russia represent a significant escalation and pose the most immediate danger.
Trump’s comments follow earlier threats he made toward Iran. The US government previously accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of plotting to assassinate Trump, an accusation Iran denies.
During his first presidency, in 2020, Trump ordered an airstrike that killed Qassem Soleimani, a high-ranking Iranian military commander. Two years earlier, in 2018, he withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal negotiated under President Barack Obama. This withdrawal reinstated US sanctions against Iran, which had been eased under the agreement. The deal had restricted Iran’s uranium enrichment program, a process that can produce materials for nuclear weapons.
