After Matt Gaetz withdrew his bid for attorney general amid resistance over allegations of sexual misconduct against him that he denied throughout, now his political future faces uncertainty though there are many avenues that he can explore. But will he get back his Congress seat from which he resigned as soon as he was nominated as the attorney general? The answer is no. Matt Gaetz can’t automatically get his House seat back and he would potentially have to run for an election again. But it might not be something that he wants at this point.
Another role in Trump administration?
Matt Gaetz opted out of the nomination on his own at a time when reports claimed that Donald Trump was pitching for Gaetz. Elon Musk called Gaetz the ‘Justice of Hammer’ and there were apparently no issues over the allegations against him in the top rung of the the party.
Gatez could still get another role in the Trump administration that would not require a Senate confirmation.
Run for Governor?
Gaetz can also run for governor once Florida Gov Ron DeSantis’s term end in 2026 but it will also be controversial because of the sexual misconduct allegations.
Return to Congress through a special election
Gaetz resigned from Congress on November 13 and in his resignation letter he wrote: “I do not intend to take the oath of office for the same office in the 119th Congress to pursue the position of Attorney General in the Trump Administration.” Gatez did not have to resign from Congress to serve in Trump’s Cabinet but his resignation came just days before the House Ethic Committee was about to publish the report into his sexual misconduct.
Now if he returns to Congress, he will lose all the seniority that he had amounted from serving since 2017, an expert said.
If he wants to return, he would have to win a special election. If he returns, he will again come under the purview of the ethics committee and the report will definitely be published.
Senate
Gaetz could fill Marco Rubio’s seat in the Senate after Rubio is confirmed as secretary of State. But Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump is also a possible candidate for Rubio’s seat.
Media or law career
Gaetz has a law degree though he rarely practised. He could also explore a career in the media as he has some experience in this. In 2021, Gaetz started his own show the “Firebrand with Matt Gaetz”.
