Former US President Donald Trump highlighted the importance of standing by one’s personal convictions while addressing his wife Melania Trump’s recent declaration of support for abortion rights. Melania’s stance, revealed in excerpts from her upcoming memoir, marks a significant departure from the conservative positions typically associated with her husband’s presidency.
Speaking to Fox News in an interview, Trump said, “We spoke about it and I said you have to write what you believe.I’m not going to tell you what to do.”
“She’s very beloved. People love our former first lady, I can tell you that. I said, you have to stick with your heart. I tell that to everybody,” Trump added.
In excerpts shared by The Guardian, Melania aligns with the Democratic Party’s stance on abortion rights, asserting her support for a woman’s right to control her own body.
In a recent video posted on social media platform X to offer a glimpse into her upcoming book, she said, “Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard. Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to these essential rights that all women possess from birth.”
The memoir, set to be released on October 8—just weeks before the US elections—positions Melania in stark contrast to her husband’s political policy. While Donald Trump has consistently backed restrictive abortion measures, notably appointing three Supreme Court justices who played pivotal roles in overturning Roe v Wade in 2022, Melania’s position presents a narrative of empowerment that diverges from her husband’s policies.
In what was seen as a balancing act, Donald Trump earlier this week said he would veto a federal abortion ban, asserting that individual states should determine their own abortion laws with minimal federal oversight. He added that he prefers exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at stake.
