Japan‘s next prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, on Monday said he intends to call a parliamentary election on October 27, following his formal election as prime minister on Tuesday.
“It is important for the new government to be judged by the people as soon as possible and, if conditions allow, I hope to call a snap election, to hold a general election on October 27,” Ishiba said.
Ishiba was chosen as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) last Friday after succeeding outgoing leader Fumio Kishida. With the Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition holding a majority in parliament, Ishiba’s election as prime minister is assured.
