Who is Eric Adams: First sitting NYC mayor Eric Adams to face criminal charges | World News – Times of India

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was elected nearly three years ago with a vow of reducing crime and enhancing public safety, is now facing an indictment as part of a federal corruption investigation. The mayor has claimed that the indictment in the light of him being vocal about the migrant crisis.
Sources familiar with the case have revealed that Adams is expected to face criminal charges, though the specifics remain undisclosed as the indictment has not yet been made public, reported the New York Times.
This development marks a historic moment, as Adams becomes the first sitting NYC mayor to face criminal charges, casting a shadow over his administration and his efforts to reform the city.
Who is Eric Adams?
The 54-year-old is 110th mayor of New York City and was elected in 2021.
Growing up in a family often that faced financial difficulties, such as eviction threats and food insecurity, Adams’ life took a crucial turn at age 15, when he was beaten by police officers.
Eventually, he chose to join the New York Police Department (NYPD). He served in the NYPD for over 20 years, rising to the rank of captain.
During his time as an officer, he became known for advocating police reforms, particularly against racial bias and misconduct. Adams co-founded “100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care,” an organisation that sought to hold law enforcement accountable while promoting safer communities.
He also helped develop the city’s first computerised crime-tracking system, which played a significant role in improving public safety.
From policing to making policies: Adam’s years in public service
Adams transitioned from policing to politics in 2006 when he was elected to the New York State Senate. He represented sections of Brooklyn, championing causes such as tenant rights, workers’ protections, and the reduction of gun violence. Adams was a vocal opponent of the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy and played a key role in advancing human rights legislation, including marriage equality.
In 2013, Adams became Brooklyn’s first Black Borough President. During his tenure, he focused on reducing inequality, improving public safety, and fostering economic growth. His leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic was marked by his hands-on efforts to support vulnerable New Yorkers, including the distribution of food and personal protective equipment.
Adams declared his intention to run for mayor of New York City in the 2021 election on November 17, 2020. When it came to the amount raised, he was the Democratic candidate’s top fundraiser, surpassed only by Raymond McGuire.
In the general election, Adams faced off against Republican Curtis Sliwa and was greatly favoured to win. On November 2, 2021, he defeated Sliwa with 67.4% of the vote to 27.9% and won to become the mayor.
