A Chinese public school bus crashed into a group of children gathered outside a middle school entrance leaving at least 11 dead, including five students in Tai’an city in Shandong province in eastern China on early Tuesday morning, as per state news agency Xinhua reports.
The incident occurred when a bus driver lost control of the vehicle near a school at 7.27 am local time, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.The bus veered off the road and collided with a group of parents and children who were on the sidewalk.
“As of now, (the incident) has caused the deaths of 11 people, of whom six were parents and five were students,” the broadcaster added. It said that one individual is currently in a “critical” condition, while another 12 people are in “stable” condition.
Photos and videos circulating on social media platforms depicted a distressing scene, with adults attending to children lying on the road, their clothes stained with blood, alongside a large grey bus.
The bus involved in the incident was a vehicle specifically designed and modified for student transportation.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
In a separate tragic incident that occurred in 2017 in the eastern Chinese city of Weihai, Shandong province, where a school bus crashed and burst into flames inside a tunnel, killing a dozen people, including 11 kindergarten pupils. Among the victims were the driver, six Chinese children, and five South Korean children.
The cause of the crash remains uncertain, with questions lingering about whether it was an intentional act or the result of unsafe driving.
