A boat carrying over 50 migrants sank off France‘s northern coast in the English Channel on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people.
French maritime authorities reported that around a dozen individuals were found in critical condition. The incident took place near Gris-Nez point, causing everyone on board to be thrown into the water.
Medical teams were promptly deployed due to the seriousness of the incident, and a first aid station was set up at the Boulogne-sur-Mer fishing port. The sea temperature in the area was around 20°C (68°F).
The International Organisation for Migration reported that at least 30 migrants have died or gone missing attempting to cross to the UK this year.
French authorities said: “The boat got into difficulty off Gris-Nez point and everyone aboard ended up in the water. Boats and aircraft were scrambled for the rescue operation and more than 50 people were picked up. It had no other immediate information about injuries.”
UK home office data disclosed that at least 2,109 migrants attempted to cross the English Channel on small boats in the past seven days. This data includes individuals found in the Channel or upon arrival.
Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, rising xenophobia, and the hostile treatment of migrants are driving them to make risky journeys northward.
The English Channel remains a risky and heavily trafficked route for asylum seekers. Despite the dangers, many continue to attempt the crossing in search of a better life.
