DHAKA: Noting that Bangladesh stands at a crucial juncture in its history, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said the UN fully supports efforts towards an “inclusive and prosperous democracy” and laid emphasis on protection of minority communities.
“It is my hope that your govt will take an inclusive approach, including by taking into account the voices of the youths and women, as well as that of minority and indigenous communities,” he said in a letter to interim govt chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Guterres said he counts on the interim government to ensure the full protection of all citizens and, in particular, of minorities. The UN chief said the world body remains committed to working with the Yunus-led interim government and to extending support, as may be requested, including through the resident coordinator and the UN country team. “I welcome efforts to restore calm and to organise parliamentary elections in Bangladesh,” Guterres said.
“I also strongly urge you to ensure the well-being of Rohingya refugees, especially in view of the deteriorating situation in Myanmar,” he added.
