Former President Donald Trump is requesting a delay in his sentencing for the New York hush money criminal case until after the November presidential election. In a letter released Thursday, Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, argued that proceeding with the sentencing as planned on September 18—just seven weeks before Election Day—would constitute election interference.
Blanche said that a postponement would also provide Trump with the opportunity to consider his next steps. This is in light of the expected ruling on September 16 by trial judge Juan M. Merchan regarding the defense’s request to overturn the verdict and dismiss the case based on the US Supreme Court’s recent July decision on presidential immunity.
“There is no basis for continuing to rush,” Blanche wrote in the letter, stressing the need for more time to address the legal complexities involved.
