Democrat Kamala Harris has a 42 per cent to 37 per cent lead over Republican Donald Trump in the race for the November 5 US presidential election, according to an Ipsos poll released on Thursday.
The poll, conducted online from August 2-7 with a margin of error of around 3 percentage points, showed that Harris had increased her lead since a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos survey, which had her leading Trump 37 per cent to 34 per cent. The nationwide poll of 2.045 US adults also revealed that support for independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr had dropped from 10 per cent in July to 4 per cent in August.
In a separate poll focusing on the seven states where the 2020 election was closer- Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Caroline, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – Ipsos found Harris leading Trumo 42 per cent to 40 per cent, The poll did not provide a breakdown of results for individual states.
Harris entered the race on July 21 after President Joe Biden, 81, ended his campaign and endorsed her following a poor debate performance against Trumo on June 27. prior to Biden’s withdrawal, Reuters/Ipsos polls had generally shown Biden and Trump tied, although Biden was performing worse than he had at the same point in the 2020 election, which he won against Trump,
The August Ipsos survey also revealed that more voters associated the word “patriot” – a term frequently used in Trump’s campaign speeches – with Trump than with Harris However, the word “weird”, which Harris supporters have recently used to mock Trump, was also more commonly associated with the Republican candidate.
