A man in Shenzhen, China, had his left eyeball removed after swatting a drain fly on his face which led to a severe infection.
The incident began with the fly landing on the man’s face, giving him a red, swollen, and painful left eye within an hour. Despite treatment for seasonal conjunctivitis, his condition deteriorated, eventually requiring the removal of his eyeball to prevent the infection from reaching his brain, reported the South China Morning Post.
Wu, the man who experienced this harrowing situation, encountered the fly in Shenzhen, located in Guangdong province.Following the fly swat, his eye quickly became red and painful. Medical professionals initially diagnosed him with seasonal conjunctivitis. However, the prescribed medication failed to stop the infection, causing severe ulceration in his eye and the surrounding area.
Doctors found that the infection had progressed to a point where medications could no longer halt it. To stop the infection from spreading to Wu’s brain, the only solution was to remove his eyeball entirely.
Mainland reports identified the insect as a drain fly, whose larvae commonly inhabit damp, dark spaces in homes such as bathrooms, kitchens, and sinks. These insects are known carriers of many germs.
Experts advise the public to remain calm when insects approach their eyes and to avoid swatting them. “Always keeping the bathroom and kitchen clean is the best way to protect ourselves,” one online observer wrote on Weibo.
The incident quickly gathered attention on social media, with users expressing their concerns about drain flies commonly found in households. “This is terrifying. I often see these small insects in my bathroom and will no longer kill them randomly,” commented another user on Weibo.
In another incident, in October 2018, a 97-year-old woman from Shandong province experienced severe pain in her left cheek after a fly landed on a wound and caused a secondary infection. Her family noted the bathroom had not been cleaned for a while, attracting numerous drain flies.
