There should be a one-year jail sentence for anyone who desecrates the American flag, US former President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.
“You should get a one-year jail sentence if you do anything to desecrate the American flag,” The Hill quoted Trump saying on TV channel Fox News.
This remark came after a group of protesters removed all three American flags flying outside the metro transit hub and burned at least one of them that was taken down.
“Now, people will say, ‘Oh, it’s unconstitutional.’ Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that,” the former president continued. “We have to work in Congress to get a one-year jail sentence. When they’re allowed to stomp on the flag and put lighter fluid on the flag and set it afire, when you’re allowed to do that — you get a one-year jail sentence, and you’ll never see it again.”
Earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters had assembled on Pennsylvania Avenue and 3rd Street, outside the Gallery of Art while Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke down the road in the US Capitol to members of Congress about his country’s ongoing war with Hamas. Organizers of the protest included Answer Coalition and Code Pink, with speakers from various organizations, including one representing the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Later that night, House Republicans visited Union Station and replaced American flags that anti-Israel protesters had earlier burned, replacing them with Palestinian flags. House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed the media during the restoration of the American flags. The anti-Israel protesters had gathered in Washington, D.C., coinciding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress, as per Fox News.
US Capitol Hill Police claimed the Union Station flags were out of their jurisdiction and were therefore unprotected.
“No flags under our protection have been removed or vandalized. Our officers will enforce the law if anyone attempts to remove a flag in USCP jurisdiction. To clear up inaccurate reporting,” they said in a statement.
