US Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday said that she has secured the broad support needed to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
“I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon,” she said adding that “tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee.”
According to a report from The Associated Press, Harris has garnered sufficient support from Democratic delegates to secure her party’s nomination against Republican Donald Trump.In the wake of President Joe Biden‘s decision to withdraw from the reelection bid, top Democrats have rallied behind Harris, aiming to put the weeks of internal party drama behind them and unite in their efforts to defeat Trump with just over 100 days until the election.
Several state delegations, including Texas and Harris’ home state of California, met late Monday to confirm their support for her.
By Monday night, Harris had secured the backing of well over the 1,976 delegates needed to win on the first ballot, according to the AP tally. No other candidate was mentioned by any delegate contacted by the AP. California state democratic chairman Rusty Hicks reported that 75% to 80% of the state’s delegation unanimously supported Harris during a call on Tuesday.
Harris expressed gratitude to President Biden and the Democratic Party for their faith in her and looked forward to making her case directly to the American people. She acknowledged the recent “rollercoaster” of events but expressed confidence in her new campaign team, promising to unite the Democratic Party, the nation, and win the election.
Harris quickly leaned into the themes that will be prominent in her campaign against Trump, contrasting her time as a prosecutor with Trump’s felony convictions and casting herself as a defender of economic opportunity and abortion access.
As Biden handed off the mantle of leadership to Harris, he added: “I’m watching you kid. I love you.” Harris was headed to the battleground state of Wisconsin on Tuesday for her first full-fledged campaign event since announcing her candidacy.
Harris must now pick a running mate and pivot the massive political operation built to reelect Biden to boost her candidacy instead. On Sunday afternoon, Biden’s campaign formally changed its name to Harris for President, reflecting that she is inheriting his political operation and war chest. She added $81 million to that total in the first 24 hours after Biden’s endorsement, setting a presidential fundraising record.
