After the bodies of 6 Vietnamese tourists was discovered in a hotel room in Bangkok, local police have said that one of the deceased was behind the incident. The blood tests of the dead revealed the presence of cyanide in the blood, said deputy Commander Noppasil Poonsawas from the Metropolitan Police Bureau’s investigations unit.
Lt Gen Trairong Piwpan, head of the forensic division of the Thai police, reported that cyanide was detected in the cups and thermoses discovered in the room.
“We would like to confirm that one of the six dead caused this incident using cyanide,” Poonsawas said adding, “We are confident one of the six conducted the crime.”
According to Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang, the chief of police in Bangkok, the deceased individuals were identified as two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnamese nationals, consisting of three males and three females.
What was the motive?
Noppasin Punsawat, the deputy police chief of Bangkok, stated that the suspected motive behind the tragic incident might have been related to a financial dispute between a married couple who had invested money with one of the individuals. The couple allegedly felt that their investment was not being managed appropriately, as indicated by information obtained from the victims’ relatives.
What did the PM say?
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin mentioned that the Vietnamese and United States embassies have been notified about the deaths, and the American FBI is participating in the investigation.
When questioned about the potential impact of the news on a scheduled conference with the Russian energy minister at the hotel later that day, Srettha expressed that it was improbable. “This wasn’t an act of terrorism or a breach in security, everything is fine.”
