A 34-year-old man from New York City, Pete Ordane, found himself in a harrowing situation when he was swept away by strong currents while swimming in the ocean. The powerful tide carried him approximately 5 miles from his starting point in Breezy Point, Queens, all the way to the coast of New Jersey.
According to a report from NYP, Ordane’s ordeal lasted for several hours as he struggled to stay afloat in the open water.
Fortunately, his plight was noticed by a commercial fisherman and his son, who spotted him around 9 am on Monday, approximately 2 miles off the coast of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, according to the Middletown township police department.
After being brought aboard the fishing vessel, Ordane was transported to the Monmouth Cove Marina in Port Monmouth, NJ.
Despite the gruelling experience, he was found to be in “good condition” and declined further medical treatment. The fisherman and his son, who wished to remain anonymous, provided Ordane with dry clothes and food before he arranged for his own transportation from the area.
The Middletown township police praised the quick-thinking actions of the fisherman and his son, saying that they had “undoubtedly” saved Ordane’s life. This incredible rescue comes on the heels of a tragic incident just two weeks prior, where two teenage girls drowned off Coney Island in Brooklyn.
