NEW DELHI: Yemen‘s Houthi rebels launched a missile attack on the US aircraft carrier Eisenhower in the Red Sea, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on Friday. The strike comes in response to recent US and British airstrikes on Yemeni soil.
According to Saree, six US and British strikes have resulted in casualties, with 16 people killed and 41 wounded, including civilians.The strikes targeted various locations in the province of Hodeidah, including the port of Salif, a radio building in Al-Hawk district, Ghalifa camp, and two houses.
Both the US Central Command and the British defence ministry confirmed the airstrikes, stating they were conducted to deter the Houthi militants from disrupting shipping in the Red Sea. The joint operation targeted 13 locations in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, with specific focus on Hodeidah, where drones and surface-to-air weapons were reportedly housed.
While the British defence ministry emphasized the measures taken to minimize civilian casualties and non-military infrastructure damage, Houthi spokesperson Mohamed Abdelsalam condemned the strikes as “brutal aggression” against Yemen, linking them to the country’s support for Gaza.
Iran, a key ally of the Houthi rebels, also denounced the airstrikes, condemning them as violations of Yemen’s sovereignty and international laws. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani held the US and British governments responsible for the consequences of what he termed “crimes against the Yemeni people.”
