NEW DELHI: Four people died while at least 15 were injured at a campaign event for the Citizens’ Movement party in Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico.
According to a report by the local newspaper, the structure at the event collapsed due to a gust of wind.
The collapse happened in San Pedro Garza Garcia, a wealthy enclave near Monterrey. Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the party’s presidential candidate, confirmed on social media that he was “OK” after being taken to a local hospital, though some of his team members sustained injuries.Alvarez announced that he was returning to the site of the accident.
Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia addressed the public in a video shared on social media, advising residents to remain indoors due to severe thunderstorms in the area and acknowledging the accident.
Alvarez Maynez is currently polling in third place in Mexico’s presidential election scheduled for June 2, trailing significantly behind ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum and second-place Xochitl Galvez, who represents a broad opposition coalition.
In a social media post, Galvez offered condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with her competitor Maynez.
