NEW DELHI: Millions in North America experienced the awe of the recent solar eclipse, with some viewers now facing the consequences of not adhering to safety guidelines. A notable number of social media users have reported discomfort, with one individual from Manitoba, Canada, stating, “My eyes are now boiling and my neck is suspiciously sore,” reflecting a surge in Google searches for “eyes are sore.”
Health professionals and NASA have long advised the use of proper viewing equipment, such as eclipse glasses or safe handheld solar viewers, to avoid harm.Despite these warnings, around 100 people in the US and Canada have reported potential eclipse-related retina damage following the event, based on an informal American Astronomical Society survey.
Experts emphasize that “eye pain” is not a definitive symptom of retinal damage, as the retina lacks pain receptors. Instead, symptoms may include headaches, blurred vision, a blind spot, color distortion, sensitivity, or other visual distortions, with some improvements possible over time. However, permanent central vision loss can occur if the macula, a critical area of the retina, is burned.
While some have sought medical interventions, including steroids, there is no proven treatment for solar retinopathy. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus notes the absence of evidence supporting these treatments. Eye safety specialists advise immediate consultation with an eye doctor upon suspecting solar retinopathy.
The rush for eclipse glasses, including searches for ISO-approved variants, underscored the event’s popularity, but also the risks of insufficient protection. Misinformation and the distribution of counterfeit glasses exacerbated the issue, leaving many to rely on potentially unsafe viewing methods.
As the community grapples with the aftermath, the experience serves as a stern reminder of the importance of eye safety during such celestial events, underscoring the delicate balance between witnessing natural wonders and ensuring personal well-being.
