NEW DELHI: Peter Pellegrini, a government ally known for his skepticism towards Ukraine, emerged victorious in the Slovakia presidential elections on Saturday, defeating Ivan Korcok, a pro-Western diplomat.
Korcok got 47% of the vote against former Prime Minister Pellegrini’s 53%.
Accepting his defeat, Korcok said, “I am honestly disappointed. But I’m an athlete, so I can respect even this result.I want to congratulate the winner.”
“I want to express my belief that Peter Pellegrini will be independent and will act according to his own convictions and without orders,” he added.
The election revolved around differing opinions on the Ukraine conflict, with Russia’s invasion playing a significant role with Pellegrini advocating for peace talks in contrast with the divisive views within Slovak politics.
