NEW DELHI: Tens of thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv to protest against prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the conflict with Hamas in Gaza reached its six-month mark. The protest took place at ‘Democracy Square’, a symbolic location following previous demonstrations against judicial reforms.
Protesters demanded elections and called for Netanyahu’s resignation as the Gaza war continued into its seventh month.Similar rallies occurred in other cities, including one attended by opposition leader Yair Lapid.
“They haven’t learnt anything, they haven’t changed,” he said at that rally, emphasizing the need for a leadership change.
“Until we send them home, they won’t give this country a chance to move forward,” he added.
Clashes between protesters and police were reported in Tel Aviv, leading to one arrest. The demonstration expanded as families of Gaza hostages joined in solidarity.
Recently, the army recovered the body of a hostage abducted during a Hamas attack in October. This retrieval marked the twelfth hostage body brought back from Gaza. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over a thousand deaths in southern Israel and more than 33,000 in Gaza, predominantly affecting civilians.
Currently, 129 hostages remain in Gaza, including 34 presumed deceased. Demonstrations are set to continue, with a planned rally in Jerusalem. The ongoing protests reflect the deep-seated concerns and mounting pressure within Israeli society regarding the handling of the Gaza conflict.
