NEW DELHI: A dam burst in the Russian city of Orsk on Friday leading to the city’s evacuation, local emergency services said.
The emergencies ministry stated, according to state news agency TASS, that the breach could affect up to 4,000 houses housing 10,000 residents in a suburban area of Orsk which has a population of 2,30,000.
Efforts are underway to evacuate residents and reinforce the dam in the city, located about 1,800 km east of Moscow near the Kazakhstan border.
Unverified footage circulating on the Telegram message app purported to show water flowing through a hole in a low-slung earthen dam.
Reports mention the establishment of six evacuation points by local authorities. Unverified videos on Telegram depict water flowing through the damaged dam.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Orenburg region, with 3,500 flood-affected individuals receiving assistance from the ministry. The region, including Orsk and neighboring areas, has experienced severe flooding.
