NEW DELHI: China has released a travel advisory for its citizens planning trips to the United States, cautioning them to brace for potential unexpected situations, including searches. This warning follows reports of Chinese students and company employees facing “unwarranted interrogations and harassment” by US airport law enforcement, as announced by the ministry of foreign affairs through its WeChat account.
Chinese nationals encountering difficulties in the US are urged to seek assistance from their embassy or consulate, a South China Morning Post report said.
A notable case highlighted by China Science Daily involved a PhD candidate in biological sciences who was deported upon her attempt to re-enter the US for studies. She endured a body search, lengthy interrogation, and solitary confinement, later discovering she was not alone in such experiences. Many affected students were questioned about their scholarships from the China Scholarship Council and any involvement in sensitive research.
Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning criticized the US for disrupting exchanges between the two nations, attributing these actions to a “cold war mentality.” Similarly, ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin accused the US of “weaponising” academic research and negatively impacting bilateral relations, the SCMP report said.
Despite recent tensions, both China and the US have expressed intentions to foster educational and cultural exchanges. President Xi Jinping announced plans to invite 50,000 young Americans to study in China over the next five years during his visit to the US in November. Furthermore, Xi’s recent discussions with US business, academic, and policy representatives emphasized the significance of the China-US relationship and the value of increasing visits and exchanges between the two countries.
Following Xi’s meetings, Chinese education minister Huai Jinpeng and Stephen Schwarzman, chairman of Blackstone Group, convened in Beijing to discuss enhancing student exchanges and cooperation between top universities in both nations.
