NEW DELHI: A shocking verdict was delivered on Friday as a former executive was condemned to death for the 2020 fatal poisoning of the founder of a renowned Chinese gaming firm, known for its connections to “Game of Thrones” and the Netflix adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem.”
Xu Yao, the perpetrator, targeted Yoozoo Game founder Lin Qi in a sinister plot, lacing his food with poison amidst a business-related dispute, according to the Shanghai First Intermediate People’s Court. The tragic incident led to Lin’s demise at the age of 39 on Christmas day, shortly after the poisoning took place in December 2020.
The poisoning spree did not end with Lin Qi; Xu also tainted office beverages between September and December 2020, leaving four colleagues gravely ill due to personal conflicts, as per court disclosures.
Yoozoo Games, based in Shanghai, communicated Lin’s untimely death through a statement from his family but did not delve into specifics. The company, in a collective social media tribute, expressed their continuing belief in kindness and beauty despite the loss, quoting “The Three-Body Problem.”
Under Lin’s leadership, Yoozoo secured the cinematic rights to the acclaimed Chinese science fiction series, “The Three-Body Problem,” with Xu Yao leading the subsidiary overseeing the trilogy’s related projects.
Lin was credited as an executive producer on the English-language Netflix series adaptation, spearheaded by “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and DB Weiss. This new series delves into the narrative of modern-day scientists grappling with an impending alien invasion.
The newly launched Netflix series, featuring an ensemble cast with the likes of Eiza Gonzalez and Benedict Wong, alongside executive producers Brad Pitt and Rosamund Pike, draws audiences into a world intertwining science and unforeseen alien threats.
In addition to its foray into film rights, Yoozoo Games is also recognized for developing “Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming,” a game inspired by the acclaimed television series.
