NEW DELHI: The search efforts involve both state and federal authorities, along with the military’s assistance, as additional troops are being deployed.
The incidents unfolded following an armed confrontation on Thursday in Badiraguato, resulting in three fatalities. This town holds significance as the birthplace of Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Notably, Culiacan, where these events transpired, has a history of violence associated with the Sinaloa cartel, including clashes during previous operations involving El Chapo’s family members.
The motive behind the recent abductions remains unclear, with authorities refraining from commenting on any potential connections to previous incidents.
Mexico continues to grapple with a surge in violence, with reports of attacks on municipal candidates. A mayoral candidate in Puebla state was killed, marking another grim chapter in the ongoing election-related violence across the country.
Humberto Amezcua, the mayor of Pihuamo, was gearing up for re-election before his tragic death, adding to the growing toll of aspiring candidates targeted in recent times. The broader context reveals a stark reality of violence in Mexico, with over 30 individuals murdered in election-related incidents since last June, including 16 aspiring candidates.
This wave of violence underscores the challenges faced by the country, with nearly 450,000 recorded murders since the launch of a controversial anti-drug military campaign in 2006.
