‘Young kids will go crazy’: After trying to ban it, Trump is now defending TikTok – Times of India

Former President Donald Trump has made a notable reversal in his stance towards TikTok, the Chinese-owned app he once aimed to banish from the United States. His recent defense of the platform coincides with a meeting with a prominent Republican donor, sparking debate over the motivations behind his changed position.
Trump recently suggested that eliminating TikTok could inadvertently boost Facebook, a company he labels as a public adversary. “Without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people,” he commented during a Monday interview. Despite past concerns, Trump now acknowledges the app’s mixed impact, noting, “There are a lot of young kids on TikTok who will go crazy without it.”
This shift comes after Trump’s 2020 attempt to remove TikTok from US app stores and force its sale was thwarted by a federal court, which criticized the move as “arbitrary and capricious.”
The debate reignites as American legislators from both parties call for TikTok’s ban amid renewed concerns over data privacy and national security. This push is countered by ByteDance’s significant increase in lobbying efforts post-Trump’s presidency.
Questions arise regarding Trump’s softened approach towards TikTok, especially after his recent reconciliation with Club for Growth’s leadership and his interactions with billionaire Jeff Yass, a significant ByteDance investor. Critics argue this change may damage Trump’s tough-on-China reputation, while others suggest it reflects complex geopolitical and business dynamics.
ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, has significantly increased its lobbying efforts and expenditure in Washington since Trump’s initial executive order against the company, possibly impacting the broader political and regulatory environment.
The ongoing discussion reflects the intricate interplay between politics, business interests, and digital privacy, underscoring the challenges in regulating global tech giants amidst political pressure.
