NEW DELHI: Russian financial watchdog, Rosfinmonitoring, has added chess grandmaster and political activist Garry Kasparov to its list of ‘terrorists and extremists‘.
The former world chess champion has been a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin and has consistently spoke against Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.
Rosfinmonitoring, responsible for combating money laundering and terror financing, can now freeze Kasparov’s bank accounts.The reasons behind this move were not disclosed by the watchdog.
Human rights organizations argue that this labeling is another tactic employed by the Kremlin to suppress dissent, alongside the ‘foreign agent’ label used against perceived enemies of the state.
Kasparov, renowned as one of the world’s greatest chess players, has resided in the United States for over a decade, engaging in political activism.
In February last year, he called on the West to continue supporting Kyiv and asserted that Ukraine’s victory over Moscow was a prerequisite for democratic progress in Russia.
