NEW DELHI: US President Joe Biden in an interview with TV comic Seth Meyers downplayed concerns over his age and defended his choice to run again for presidency by telling the host that he was “better than the other guy,” referring to the 77 year Donald Trump.
“You got to take a look at the other guy. He’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name,” Biden responded to laughter and cheers from the live audience.
Biden referred back to an earlier segment in the show where Meyers played a video of Trump seemingly addressing his wife Melania as “Mercedes.
“Number two, it’s about how old your ideas are. Look, I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back. He wants to take us back on Roe v. Wade,” he said, referring to women’s reproductive freedoms.
Biden has faced criticism for his limited media interviews and press conferences since taking office as he faces intense campaign season against the media-savvy Trump.
Sunglasses
Biden strolled on stage as the band played the presidential anthem “Hail to the Chief” and then briefly pretended to become lost on stage, parodying the occasional lapses he has made after giving speeches.
Biden’s act made people laugh, especially when Biden wore his usual aviator-style sunglasses to play along with the “Dark Brandon” joke , which portrays America’s oldest president as a laser-eyed superhero.
Apart from the jokes, the host Seth Mayers also posed serious questions to Biden on issues rannging from the Hamas war to Trump’s comment on Nato.
On a ceasefire in Gaza despite the high Palestinian death toll, Biden said that there was a potential agreement “in principle” for a temporary truce, which would involve Israel refraining from engaging in activities during Ramadan in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
“I think that if we get that temporary ceasefire, we’re going to be able to move in a direction where we can change the dynamic” and move to a longer-term settlement, he said.
Biden also criticized former President Trump for suggesting that he would encourage Russian President Putin to invade Nato allies who didn’t fulfill their financial commitments.
In an attempt to reach young audiences, Biden recently made his debut on TikTok despite the platform being officially considered a security risk by Washington.
