NEW DELHI: A house explosion in Sterling, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, resulted in the death of a firefighter and injured at least 11 people on Friday evening, officials said.
Assistant chief of the local fire department, James Williams described the scene as “total devastation.” “There’s a debris field well into the street and into the neighboring homes,” he said.
The incident took place around 7:40 pm, when fire and rescue workers were sent to the house for “an investigation,” as per Williams. They were attending to a report concerning a gas leak, said the spokesperson for the department, Laura Rinehart.
“Soon after arrival, with firefighters inside, the house did explode,” Williams added. He said that Nine firefighters and two civilians were rushed to nearby hospitals, with injuries ranging from “severe” to “less severe.”
Local television footage and social media posts showed the remains of the home, with wreckage spread across the yard and street.
The cause of the explosion is currently being investigated.
