NEW DELHI: Russian authorities detained over 100 individuals at impromptu memorials for deceased opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the OVD-Info rights group said on Saturday.
As of February 17, “more than 101 people have already been detained in 10 cities,” including 11 in the capital Moscow, as reported on OVD-Info’s website.
President Putin’s critic, Alexei Navalny died at the Arctic prison colony on Friday where he was serving a 19-year-term.The reason behind his death is not known yet.
In a statement, the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said that Navalny “felt unwell” after a walk on Friday, and “almost immediately lost consciousness”.
Navalny(47), who was supposed to be in in jail till he turned 74, repeatedly warned that Putin’s Russia is a state run by “thieves and criminals” and that one day there will be seismic change via revolt.
Russian authorities dismissed Navalny’s criticism as “nonsense” and said that he and his supporters are extremists with links to the US CIA intelligence agency intent on sowing discord in Russia.
He earned admiration from the divided Russian opposition for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany where he underwent treatment for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent in Siberia.
On his return, he was jailed. Russia denies Navalny’s claims that Russia’s secret police poisoned him with Novichok.
