NEW DELHI: French police fatally shot a man in the early hours of Saturday after he reportedly threatened them with a meat cleaver, according to prosecutors. The officials said that they resorted to gunfire following the use of a Taser.
Born in 1984 in Sudan, the man had no prior criminal record, according to prosecutors, who disclosed the initiation of two investigations into the man’s actions and the subsequent police response.
Dressed in an Arab-style robe, the man was found at a tram stop in eastern Paris, brandishing a meat cleaver and carrying a notebook with Arabic writing.
Upon the police’s arrival at the scene, the man declined to surrender the cleaver and advanced toward the officers.
Preliminary accounts suggest that a total of approximately 20 shots were fired by four police officers, with no reported injuries among the law enforcement present at the scene.
The four officers who discharged their firearms were transported to the hospital in a state of “shock”.
