Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a long-term security pact with France amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, as reported by Al Jazeera.
This comes just hours after securing a similar agreement and aid from Germany. The new pact with France includes a commitment to provide more arms, train Ukrainian soldiers, and offer up to three billion euros in military assistance over a period of 10 years.
Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the artillery sector and pave the way for Ukraine‘s integration into the European Union and NATO.
Zelenskyy expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation, stating on social media, “Our collaboration is yielding positive results in protecting life in Ukraine and across Europe.”
Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany also signed a 10-year security pact with Zelenskyy, which includes military support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, export controls, and the freezing of Russian assets. Germany has also prepared an immediate support package worth 1.13 billion euros focused on air defense and artillery.
Scholz highlighted the significance of the agreement, saying, “It makes clear that Germany will continue to support an independent Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion. And if there is another Russian aggression in the future, we have agreed on detailed diplomatic, economic, and military support.”
In addition to France and Germany, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, also signed a security accord with Ukraine in January.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has been emphasizing the importance of providing more aid to Ukraine. The US Senate recently passed a 61 billion US dollar aid bill for Ukraine, but its fate remains uncertain as some right-wing US Republicans in the House have expressed opposition, arguing that the funds should be allocated for domestic issues.
Biden has stressed the urgency of approving funds for Ukraine, particularly in light of the reported death of Russian anti-corruption activist Alexey Navalny.
He warned, “The failure to support Ukraine at this critical moment will never be forgotten… We have to help now.”
