NEW DELHI: Following the recent general elections in Pakistan, the country faces a hung Parliament, leading the three main political parties to intensify efforts in forming a coalition government. Former PM Nawaz Sharif, backed by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, has called for a unity government to address the country’s challenges.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced results for 264 out of 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly.Independent candidates, largely supported by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured 101 seats, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) winning 75 and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) securing 54 seats.
To form a government, a party needs to win 133 seats out of the contested 265. The PML-N is leading the push for a coalition government and has engaged with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), reaching a “principle agreement” to work together.
Former deputy defense minister Lt. Gen. Alexander Pavlyuk has been appointed as the new commander of Ukraine’s ground forces. Meanwhile, the reshuffling of military commanders signals President Zelenskyy’s efforts to maintain momentum against Russian forces.
As negotiations unfold, the PPP, led by Bilawal Zardari Bhutto, has also entered discussions with the PML-N. However, reports suggest that PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif is reluctant to concede the prime minister’s slot to PPP Chairman Bilawal in exchange for support.
In the evolving political landscape, the PML-N is exploring multiple coalition options, including alliances with the PPP, MQM, JUI-F, and other smaller parties. The situation is being referred to as a potential “PDM-2.0,” reflecting the experience of the Pakistan Democratic Movement coalition established after Khan’s removal.
The PTI, despite rejecting attempts at creating a new coalition (PDM 2.0), faces challenges in forming a government without alliances with major parties like the PML-N or PPP. The PTI has demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
With the political landscape in flux, the next steps hinge on negotiations, potential coalition formations, and the finalization of election results, ultimately shaping the trajectory of Pakistan’s political future.
