BEIRUT: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, expressed his commitment to supporting the militant Hezbollah group upon his arrival in Beirut on Friday. He emphasized that Lebanon’s security is closely linked to Iran and the region. Representatives from Hezbollah, as well as the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, welcomed Amirabdollahian.Iran, a key supporter of these militant groups, has been urging the United States to pressure Israel into halting its offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Hezbollah initiated attacks along Lebanon’s border with Israel on October 8th, breaking a 17-year period of relative calm. This came a day after Hamas launched its attack on southern Israel, triggering the ongoing war. Hezbollah officials have stated that they will cease their attacks on Israeli military posts once Israel ends its assault on Gaza.
In a statement to reporters at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, Amirabdollahian praised Hezbollah and the resistance in Lebanon for their courageous and effective role in the conflict. He also affirmed Iran’s continued strong support for the resistance in Lebanon, highlighting the country’s security as crucial for Iran and the region. Amirabdollahian is scheduled to meet with Lebanese officials and hold talks with Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
Prior to his arrival in Beirut, Syrian state media reported that the country’s air defense units had shot down two drones near the capital, Damascus. The military statement mentioned that the drones originated from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, without providing further details. According to an opposition war monitor, an airstrike targeted an air base in Damascus’ Mazzeh neighborhood, following the landing of an Iranian cargo plane at the base. The monitor did not specify if there were any casualties. It is worth noting that thousands of Iran-backed fighters are present in Syria, supporting the Syrian government forces during the prolonged civil war. While Israel rarely acknowledges its actions in Syria, it has admitted to targeting bases of Iran-aligned militant groups and even individuals from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
