In its latest financial report, Meta disclosed the possible risks associated with its CEO’s lifestyle choices. The company expressed its concern that Zuckerberg‘s participation in extreme sports and mixed martial arts (MMA) could not only be a personal preference but also pose a danger to Meta and its investors, as per a report in CNBC.

Threads by Meta: Will this new baby of Mark Zuckerberg survive the market?

The report, submitted last Friday, emphasized the risk of severe injury or worse that comes with combat sports, extreme sports, and even aviation, all of which Zuckerberg is known to engage in. Meta stated, “Mr. Zuckerberg and certain other members of management participate in various high-risk activities, such as combat sports, extreme sports, and recreational aviation, which carry the risk of serious injury and death. If Mr. Zuckerberg were to become unavailable for any reason, there could be a material adverse impact on our operations.” In response to the news, Zuckerberg commented on Threads, saying, “Good point. Maybe investors should be more worried about me not doing MMA.” He was replying to a user who mentioned the positive impact of his MMA training on Meta’s stock performance. Later, he shared a GIF stating, “High risk = high reward.”
In November, Zuckerberg, who is the largest shareholder of Meta, revealed that he tore his ACL while training for a mixed martial arts competition. He posted a picture on Instagram showing himself in a hospital bed with his left leg bandaged and in a supportive brace. Zuckerberg wrote, “Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it. Grateful for the doctors and team taking care of me. I was training for a competitive MMA fight early next year, but now that’s delayed a bit. Still looking forward to doing it after I recover. Thanks to everyone for the love and support.”

It is worth noting that Zuckerberg has been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for over a year and even won an amateur tournament. In July 2023, he was awarded a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In October, he shared a selfie on Instagram showing his face swollen and marked with bruises under his eyes and on his nose. Zuckerberg explained that it happened during sparring, a common training method in combat sports, when things got out of hand.
There were also rumors of a potential cage match between Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Elon Musk following a public exchange between the two on social media in 2023. However, the Meta CEO later stated that Musk ‘isn’t serious’ about the fight and that it was time to move on. Zuckerberg said, “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious, and it’s time to move on. I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legitimate competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead. If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”
