NEW DELHI: British King Charles III, on Friday, was admitted to a private London hospital for scheduled treatment for an enlarged prostate, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace.
The palace has said his condition is benign, and added that the monarch was “delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”
Last week, the royal officials took an unusual step as they issued a bulletin regarding King’s health, disclosing that he had an enlarged prostate.
This announcement came after the statement regarding Catherine, Princess of Wales, the king’s daughter-in-law’s abdominal surgery for an unspecified condition. Kate, who is married to Prince William, the heir to the throne, will require up to two weeks of recuperation at the private London Clinic, followed by several months away from public duties.
British media sources reported that King Charles III is being treated at the same clinic as Kate and had visited her there prior to his own treatment.
Last Friday, Charles had traveled to his private estate in Sandringham, located in eastern England, to prepare for what royal officials described as a “corrective procedure” before returning to London on Thursday. The king received his diagnosis of an enlarged prostate, a common condition among men over 50 that affects urination, last Wednesday after experiencing symptoms and undergoing a check-up.
He chose to publicly share his diagnosis to encourage other men experiencing similar symptoms to seek medical attention.
Talking about his health, Charles’s second wife, Queen Camilla, 76, said that last week he was “fine” and was “looking forward to getting back to work”, after being forced to cancel engagements.
The transparency is a clear break with the past: Charles’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, suffered visibly declining health from October 2021 until her death in September 2022.
Her withdrawal was based on what officials said were “episodic mobility problems” that affected her walking and standing, leading to use a stick and even a motorised buggy at public events.
