NEW DELHI: Iran announced on Friday that it successfully conducted an air defense drill using drones designed for intercepting hostile targets along its southwestern to southeastern coasts. This comes amidst increased tensions in the region.
According to an Iranian army spokesperson quoted by state-run Press TV, the Iranian forces have successfully employed a new air defense method utilizing drones to intercept and target hostile objects.
“Iranian forces have successfully launched a new air defence method that uses drones to intercept and target hostile targets,” state-run Press TV quoted an Iranian army spokesman as saying.
The two-day drills, which began on Thursday, covered an extensive area from Abadan in southwestern Khuzestan province to Chahbahar in southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province, which shares borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The exercises involved the participation of the army’s air force and navy, as well as the aerospace force and navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), as reported by Press TV.
In a retaliatory attack, Pakistan launched air strikes on separatist militants inside Iran, two days after Iran claimed to have targeted another group within Pakistani territory.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Iran and its militia allies in the Middle East have been launching attacks on Israeli and US targets in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, Iran has conducted strikes in Syria against alleged Islamic State sites and in Iraq, where it claims to have targeted an Israeli espionage center.
