NEW DELHI: In a revelation that puts an end to months of speculation, Peruvian officials have declared that a pair of mysterious “alien mummies” discovered at Lima’s airport are, in fact, nothing more than cleverly crafted dolls with earthly origins. This announcement was made at a press conference in Lima on Friday, following a detailed scientific analysis.
The two small humanoid figures, initially causing a stir due to their unusual appearance, were identified as dolls likely made from a combination of human and animal parts. Alongside these figures, a separate three-fingered hand, purportedly from Peru‘s Nazca region, was also examined and found to have no extraterrestrial connection.
Flavio Estrada, an archaeologist with Peru’s Institute for Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, was unequivocal in his assessment. “They’re not extraterrestrials. They’re dolls made from animal bones from this planet joined together with modern synthetic glue,” he stated, dismissing any alien theories. “It’s totally a made-up story,” Estrada added, providing a definitive conclusion to the mystery.
The figurines were discovered in a cardboard box at the Lima airport offices of courier DHL, dressed in traditional Andean attire, leading some media outlets to wildly speculate about their possible alien origin. This speculation was fueled by a similar incident in Mexico last September, where two tiny mummified bodies with elongated heads and three-fingered hands were presented at a congressional hearing. Mexican journalist and UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan claimed these bodies, allegedly recovered from Peru in 2017, were about 1,000 years old and not related to any known species on Earth.
However, most experts had already dismissed these claims as fraudulent, suggesting they were possibly ancient human mummies altered with animal parts. The Lima press conference, organized by Peru’s culture ministry, did not establish a direct link between the dolls found in the DHL office and the bodies presented in Mexico but emphasized that neither were of extraterrestrial origin.
Forensic experts from Peru’s prosecutor’s office clarified that the objects were made using paper, glue, metal, and bones from both humans and animals. This debunked any lingering beliefs that the figures were from an “alien center or another planet,” as Estrada explained.
The ownership of these objects remains undetermined, with officials only revealing that they were intended for a Mexican citizen before being intercepted by customs agents. The incident has drawn international attention, particularly after Maussan’s presentation in Mexico’s congress, where he and others claimed the figures were “non-human beings that are not part of our terrestrial evolution.”
In a detailed examination, experts showcased the two-foot-long dolls, adorned in red, orange, and green clothes, and confirmed that the bones used were from birds, dogs, and other animals. The three-fingered hand, subjected to X-ray examinations, was found to be constructed from human bones, albeit poorly assembled.
This development serves as a reminder of the fine line between myth and reality, and the importance of scientific analysis in distinguishing between the two. The Peruvian authorities’ findings not only debunk the alien mummy myth but also highlight the creative lengths to which hoaxers will go to create a sensation.
