A packaging solutions company has proven cardboard can have utility in sneakers far beyond the box.

Vans partnered with Ernest, a 77-year-old company out of Los Angeles, to make a cardboard slip-on that stood up to a skate test from four professional riders. Processes including overscoring and making relief cuts were applied to a single layer of cardboard to create a material suitable to constitute an upper, offering support, flexibility and Vans‘ signature checkerboard print.

Once the specialized cardboard was finalized, it was brought to the Vans factory in Vietnam to be treated just like canvas or leather. Pieces were cut out, stitched together, reinforced with padding and leather trim and then subjected to the vulcanization process involving heat of 275 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Omar Hassan and Lizzie Armanto all skated in the cardboard slip-ons back in the U.S. After taking the shoe through a run at his local park involving quarter pipes, rails, boxes and a bowl, Alva was nonplussed in saying, “I’d call that working.”

Hassan added after his own sesh: “I didn’t even think twice when I put them on. Really good board feel, they look really cool.”

Ernest has a history of proving surprising functionality for cardboard, as its “Cardboard Chaos” series has created snowboards, skateboards, guitars and drum kits over the past 11 years.

The cardboard Vans slip-on can be won in a raffle open now through Signal Snowboards’ website. A pair in a men’s size 9.5 is being given away along with a limited-edition skateboard deck, as well as a T-shirt and sticker pack. The winner will be announced on Aug. 29.
